To achieve maximum neurosis,

the best follow up to an episode is a super late period/pee on a stick/pregnancy scare, preferably on the heels of making a major life decision...say, the decision to devote the next 12 or so years of your life to medical training.

So yeah, that happened. And then THAT happened. It has been an awesome week.

Let's check in on the list, shall we?

No one in our house has been sick this year!

KayTar hasn't had an episode all year!

I haven't emailed our pediatrician once this year!

My kids have not been absent from school a single time this year!

KayTar hasn't had to go to the hospital all year!

KayTar hasn't vomited at all this year!

Neither of my children have been to the pediatrician's office this year!

On the bright side, it took until mid-March to get down to last man standing. That's an improvement over years past.

The next time she has an episode, that last one will go bye-bye, too, because we are planning to take her to the hospital for a full workup the next go 'round (as long as she is insured, which is NOT currently the situation). Because, let's face it, there will be a next time. It has been years since she has been evaluated in the hospital for an episode and at that point they were still so short, she was out of the episode before we arrived at the hospital. I know they can't do much of anything to treat her in the hospital that we can't do at home, but we need her to be assessed in the throes of it. Josh and I both feel like we really lost something with this last episode. We lost the idea that she was free from these monsters and it was a tough blow. It is hard to see your kid go through something like that over and over, helpless to save her from it. We're done being patient with the little bastards, though.

I was going to take her back to the butterflies this weekend, but she doesn't want to go. She doesn't want to get sick again. These things were much less heart wrenching before she was so verbal and they already packed the emotional punch of a ton of bricks to the gut.

That's all I've got, folks. This afternoon I have a meeting with the premed advisor. It is happening. Dude.

Good luck with the advisor!

((hugs)) About the episodes.

I know there's nothing we can say to make it better, but your family is in my thoughts. I can't imagine going through what you all have been through... Let's hope that the next one is far far away, and that when it comes, they'll be able to learn a bit more about what's going on with that little enigma of a girl.

I don't blame you guys for wanting to go to the hospital the next time Kaytar has an episode. I think I'd be losing my patience and my composure after what you've all been through.

I'm so excited for you as you embark on a potential new adventure with medical school! There's a fire in your belly for this stuff isn't there?

Everyone who saw the premed thing coming, raise your hand!!!!

My little guy had a setback this past week too, so I know how disheartening it is. Hang in there. A new evaluation is a good idea. Keep being her advocate. That is the best thing you can do for her.

Good luck with the adviser!

I'm crossing my fingers that you are 1. insured for the next episode and 2. the workup brings some clarity for y'all.

Have a great meeting with your PREMED advisor! That is awesome!

What a crazy time for you, though! I'm glad you're going to take her for a full work up and hope it offers some answers. BUT I hope it doesn't happen again because we can always hope for the best and plan for the worst, right?

I think you'll do really well as a doctor. I'm glad you're moving that direction.

A doctor? WOW. I hear nothing but horror stories about how hard that is, but I have no doubt you can do it!

Best of luck with that, and with everything else. We're rooting for you!

I think it's a great plan to have her evaluated DURING an episode. Maybe they can get a more clear idea on what the eff is going on. Wouldn't that be nice.

How did the meeting with the advisor go? You're going to rock this doctor business. My best friend is in med school in tennessee. You are amazing.

Whew...on the pregnancy test :)

Good luck on the rest.

And, even though you don't want another episode, I hope that a hospital visit will help.

I felt so badly for your family and Kay-tar when I read about the episode. I was thinking along similar line regarding the immediate assessment while in an episode, hoping that MAYBE it could shed some light, and provide an avenue of treatment. I will keep you all in my thoughts.

All I have to say is, you are going to be an amazing doctor, Kyla.

Premed! You blow me away with your determination.

And yes! YES! Have them monitor her. Maybe something will present that is telling that they've missed. Shit. Who knows.

Deep breath and be well.

I know she's most comfortable at home during an episode, but since you know she doesn't have any memories during that time, I think it's a great idea to have her evaluated then...especially since she won't even remember it.
