Word Problem

Disclaimer: This is (mostly) rhetorical...unless you have some sort of epiphany, then by all means, bring it on!

KayTar needs to eat four times per day and intake a total of 32 ounces of Pediasure each day*. Her feeds should be as equally spaced as possible, to avoid overfilling or underfilling. While KayTar can eat while sleeping, either in the morning or at night, she cannot eat between the hours of 12-3pm or 5:30-9pm on Monday-Friday. Furthermore, she cannot eat between the hours of 7:30-9am on Tuesdays. At what times should KayTar eat?

Failed solutions to this problem:

The Saturday/Sunday solution of 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm

9am, 1pm, 5pm, 9pm

7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm

10am, 3pm, 7pm, 12am

8am, 12pm, 4pm, 8pm

And so on...

*She was having dizzy spells last week. Hello there hypoglycemia, nice to meet you! While she is used to drinking only 3 Pediasures per day, on good days, she was also eating 1-2 baby food jars and a serving of chips (another 200+ calories), so we had to add a fourth feed to the day for her.

Last week during on of the dizzy spells, she told me, "I'm flying away." This photo reminded me of that. (click to enlarge)

Love the picture!

As a future (hawt) librarian, I plead ignorance in re: your word problem.

But I bet you've got a smarty pants around who can figure it out for you.

I hope.

(wait: aren't *you* the smarty pants?)

Looks to me like a spreadsheet would be the answer...I love spreadsheets...geek, geek, geek...

Love the picture :)

She is so beautiful!
And I don't think there are enough permutations in 24 hours to solve your problem.
Hugs to you both.

I actually really like word problems like this (part of why I actually enjoyed studying for the LSAT...taking it under time constraints? not so fun).

To answer more effectively, a few questions:

a) how long does a feeding take? ie, if she's busy at noon, can she have a feeding at 11:45?

b) are you trying to avoid having an adult wake up at some crazy time of night?

c) are you trying to do them so she's hungry at certain times and consumes food orally?

Without knowing any of this, you could do 4 evenly spaced feeds at:
10am, 4pm, 10pm, and 4am

9am, 3pm, 9pm, and 3am (not so good since it bumps up against times she's not available)

11am, 5pm, 11pm, and 5am (that's what I'd do if I were in that situation, because I'd rather wake up for it at 5 than 3 or 4).

and of course, any of the half- or quarter-hour intervals in there would work too.

Hmmm...so it doesn't work for Tuesday's but what about something similiar to this:

8:30 breakfast 4oz

11:30 lunch 8oz

3:30 snack 6oz

5:15 dinner 8oz

9:15 snack 6oz

We did a similar schedule with Jakie. The idea was for meals to closely simulate actual meals...just throwing a thought out there!

Oh, and I meant to say, why does it have to be 4x per day? I don't see why the dr couldn't go with a more flexible plan.

Oh, you. That picture is magic!

And I just suddenly started to wonder this, what of KayTar when she gets older? Is she going to realize she's hungry and start eating? I'm just wondering if the doctors have addressed this.

I just keep seeing my daughter when she didn't eat one bite of anything for 30 days. I know, it is totally different. But one day she walked out eating a whole carrot cake. A whole spilling over her hand cake! (You can ignore me if you want. I just keep trying to figure this all out.)

OH, and yes, spreadsheet, totally spreadsheet this!

oof. how I wish I had a solution for you and your poor dizzy baby.

At the risk of being a complete PITA :We do a feed before midnight and one between 6 and 7. (When I say 'we' I mean norm does it.) Then there are three others. approx 10am, 2 pm and 6 pm bc we have to do 5.
So if you do one late and one early that leaves just two during the day right? I think the sleeping feeds are the key. And you just adjust it for before 730 tues and after 9 M-F.
I think....

I LOVE that picture and yesterday's too. Freckles on a kid's face are sublime. I know. I come from a family of "behind the screen doors when the shit hit the fan."

Oy. It's a beautiful photo though.

I hope that what you say in the next post comes to pass, namely that she learns to like food qua food now that the necessity is no longer there (or solved elsewise).
